Welcome to Year 5!
Welcome back for another year at Coleshill Heath. We have lots of exciting and fascinating challenges for the year ahead and we know that with your hard work and the support of your parents and carers, we will have a successful year.
So what’s happening in Year 5 this term?
Our first Cornerstones topic this year is Time Traveller!
Tick, tock, tick, tock ... the hands of the clock never stop! From the moment we are born, from toddler to teen, middle age to elderly, time stops for no man.
Have you ever travelled inside a Tardis or even found yourself entering the realms of another time through a portal?
Well now’s your time to explore the past and even the future! Hold on tight as we discover what happens to our brains and our bodies as we grow older and explore our ever-changing world!
Time Traveller: Autumn Term 1
This term we have considered the topic Time Traveller and thought about the concept of time in many different contexts through different subjects. Pupils have considered how they could explore time travel. In science we have thought about life cycles and different stages of human life. Please have a look at our curriculum overview map for curriculum coverage.
Alchemy Island: Autumn 2
This term we are taking you all on an adventure to Alchemy Island!
It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island!
You’ve got your map, co-ordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination!
During this topic we are studying the art of alchemy! In science, we have examined different materials and their properties. We have thought about different metals and their electrical conductivity. In English we have written about portals and their magical powers.
As part of our Talk for Writing work we have written pieces in response to The Manor House.
Stargazers: Spring 1
This term we are taking you on a journey to outer space!
Journey through space – the final frontier! Let’s take a trip to the stars, planets and suns and discover the amazing wonders of the night sky.
During this half term, we’ll read information texts to find out about the Solar System and the Sun, using mnemonics to help us remember the facts. We’ll make a Solar System and investigate the cycle of day into night. We’ll learn about Galileo, the ‘father’ of modern astronomy and his famous astronomical discoveries. Taking on the roles of the planets, we’ll use movement to demonstrate the motions of the planets and moons. We’ll investigate song lyrics that have used the theme of space to create innovative pieces of music and explore creativity through art, considering artists who have used the Moon as a basis for their work.
Spring 2 - Allotment
This half term, we are going to consider how we can use our forest schools area to create an allotment plot! We will consider how greenhouses and frames help the plants to grow. Our visit will inspire us to write a report about the allotment and investigate types of compost and biodegradable materials used. We’ll use food from the allotment to make delicious dishes, and plant our own fruits and vegetables. Our art skills will improve as we make detailed observational drawings, using botanical images for inspiration. We’ll write a set of instructions explaining how to plant a tree and learn how to care for plants. Once we’ve all got green fingers, we’ll write poems to celebrate the wonder of the garden. We’ll look at how well our plants have grown and make structures to support them.
