Year 5 work on the Arts award

The scarecrows arrive at the allotment plots - thanks to Year 1.

The Scarecrows have arrived for the allotment - Thanks to year 1

May has continued to be a busy month in Year 5.

‘News at 10’ Assembly: we were both delighted and excited to be able to perform our assembly again, this time to the team that helped create and design our new school, including the architect, the executive head of Unity, the Chair of Governors and key Local Authority staff. They really did do an amazing job and it was a pleasure to be able to thank them.

Sporting Achievements: three of our Year 5 boys represented the school in the North Solihull Tennis Tournament – Jamie C, Charlie C and Vinny. All three boys played well and helped us achieve fifth place.

Playing at Smithswood Sports College, the Year 5/6 hockey team came sixth in the Unity Tournament. It was a great event with some strong individual performances – especially from our top goal scorer Taryn D – and a brilliant team performance. Their exemplary attitude won the team the ‘Respect’ trophy.

The Allotment: our plot is finally beginning to take shape and the children are taking the initiative to make sure that it is weeded and watered. Our onions and potatoes are going well; the courgettes are just about surviving the slugs and ‘medieval’ herbs to prevent the plague have been planted! Reception have generously given us the three scarecrows they made and Art and Craft Club have made us a massive (very trendy) scarecrow, these will all be in place soon! A big thank you to Jackie and her staff in the kitchen, for getting our new compost bins started with vegetable and fruit peelings.

Year 5. Children’s Blogs: have a look on the school website to read some of our continued legends of the Knights of the Round Table (5W contributions by: Ellis, Larkin and Ethan E (Year 6) and Olivia, Kyra and Maisy and 5J contributions by: Ellie, Ben, Joshua and Callum and Luke, Bobby, Reece, Jack and Charlie)

Coming Up…

Redridge Residential – twelve of our Year 5’s (and Mrs Turrell) will be enjoying a week of outdoor learning.

Arts Award Day: on 27th May, Unity will be running a day of art for Year 5 to help us achieve our ‘Arts Award’.

‘Scream Machine’ trip to Drayton Manor: 20th June, thank you to everyone who has already paid (remember you can pay in instalments).

Year 5 Allotment
The better weather is bringing with it the opportunity to begin our outdoor planting. Year 5 have been using their home made propagators to germinate seeds for flowers and vegetables which we are now ready for planting outside in our raised beds. A BIG thank you to Richard and Tony for weeding the beds and putting up the beanpoles ready for our beans and peas. Two new compost bins have been delivered (courtesy of Solihull MBC) and we will be using these to produce our own compost.
Finally, we have been awarded the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Level one award for our planning and preparation work! We will be applying for our Level 2 award in the next few of weeks.
Looking forward...keep watching the plots change and look out for the appearance of a scarecrow that Art and Craft Club are busy designing and making for us!
Will-I-Am Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet and Year 5
A massive congratulations to the whole of Year 5 for their recent performance of Romeo and Juliet. Impressively the children quickly grasped the plot and some of the themes of the play. Consequently they were able to use this to perform an impressive synopsis of the play.
Assembly for the Mayor and Year 5 families.
In one week the Year 5 team put together an amazing assembly, celebrating our school and the journey we are on. Set in the BBC News Room, and including roving reporters.  every single pupil did a fabulous job. It included a song and a rap that were written and performed by the pupils. The Mayor particularly enjoyed the camera crew and sound engineer's performances and the 'Rap Boys'! What was your favourite part?
Exciting news of trips coming up for Year 5...
Our topic for the second half of the Summer Term is 'Scream Machine'.
Roll up, roll up! You're going on a day trip to Drayton Manor theme park to soak up the unique sights, smells and sounds of the fair. We will learn about the science behind roller coaster design.
Okay, ready to ride? Don't forget to scream if you want  to go faster!
More information will be coming out to you soon!

Our Cornerstones curriculum this term are:
